* Elvis, The King *

                                           By: Lisa Hutter

Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi. He had a twin brother, Jesse Garon but  unfortunately he was still born. Elvis was raised by his parents Gladys and Vernon Presley. Elvis was also raised in a poor but extremely religious household. He started to sing in a church choir when he was very young. Elvis had a unique voice. Although some people did not like him at first, they started to realize a fresh new sound come out of his mouth. Elvis died in 1977 at the age of 42.

                        Elvis was a singer and actor. He did both very well and was a crowd pleaser. Although when his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1948, he started off as a truck driver in hopes of becoming an electrician as another job, (but still enjoyed singing.) Later in 1948, he got recognized by Sam Phillips who owned at produced a blues label called Sun records. That is where his music career began. His first singles were “ That’s all right Mama” and “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” Many people agreed that Elvis had a style of Rhythm-and-blues and Country- Western. Local listeners thought Elvis had an African- American voice. They  were surprised to find out that he was white. Also because of his excitement or enthusiasm, his style of clothing, his great voice and movements people believed he symbolized Rock –n-roll. Elvis didn’t create Rock- n – Roll but, he defiantly was viewed as the king of it !!

                               Later on, Elvis moved to RCA records. His first all-over (national) T.V. appearance was on Jackie Gleason’s Stage Show, in 1955.  Although, it was his appearance in 1956 on Ed Sullivan’s  Talk of The Town  that made Elvis a national sensation or hit. About a year later, he made his first million dollar( selling) single “HeartBreak Hotel. ”Elvis also starred in one of his first movies, “ Love Me Tender. ” He made about 33 good movies and made many, many albums. From the on, he became a “flashy” nightclub performer and got married (his 2nd time) to Priscilla Beaulieu Presley. They had a daughter together named Lisa Marie Presley. (who I listen to today) Sadly, Elvis and Priscilla divorced by the time of 1973. Elvis soon became addicted to drugs and over weight. He spent his time at home living in Memphis at the house he called Graceland.  Drugs led him to his death in 1977, at age 42 which shocked those who were big fans of The King. Although Elvis is not here today, myself and Others still see him as The King of Rock-n- roll!!
