The New York Yankees were purchased in 1903 by Frank Farrell for just 18,000 dollars. They were originally called the Highlanders, until 1915 when they were purchased for 460.000 dollars.  Yankee stadium was built in 1923.  It opnened April 18, 1923, with a crowd of 74,200.  Yankee stadium is also known as the house that Ruth built.  That is so beacuse Babe Ruth at the time held the record for homeruns at 60, on September 30, 1927.  Lou Gehrig's playing streak ends at 2,130 consecutive games.

On october 5, 1953 the Yankees  win a consecutive fifth championship in a row.  It was a great on October 8, 1956, Don Larsen throws a first and only perfect game during a World Series.  It was the year 1961 that Roger Maris hit his record breaking 61st homerun.  In 1962, the longest game in Yankee history which lasted 22 innings.  On October 18, 1977, Reggie Jackson hits three homeruns in game 6 of the World Series against the Las Angeles Dodgers.  On June 6, 1978 Ron Guidry established a franchise record by striking out 18 batters.  On October 2, 1978 the Yankees clinched the A.L. pennant after being 14 games behind.  It was December 14, 1985 that Roger Maris died at then age of 51.

September 4, 1993 was a great day beacuse Jim Abbot a man with only one hand pitches a no-hitter.  On August 13, 1995 Mickey Mantle dies of cancer at the age of 63.  On May 17, 1998 David Wells tossed only the 14th regular-season perfect game in baseball history.  On September 25, 1998 the Yankees established an American League record with their 112th win of the season.  On July 18, 1999 " Yogi Berra Day " David Cone pitched a perfect game.  The Yankees won their 26th championship on October 26, 2000.
