Eleanor Roosevelt

  Eleanor Roosevelt was born in New York City, on October 11,1884. When she was 15, Her maternal grandmother sent her to a boarding school in England. Her mother and father both died before she was a teenager. In 1905 she married her distant cousin Franklin Roosevelt. They had 5 children.
    In 1918 Eleanor found out that her husband had been having an affair with her secratary. This was the turning point of there marriage. Although they did not divorce. In the 1920's Eleanor became active in the Demorcratic Party polotices to keep her handicapped husbands political career alive.
    When she came to the White house in 1933. She transformed the roll of First Lady. She became known as Franklin Roosevelts "Eyes and Ears."Eleanor often accompanied Franklin on his inspection tours of military installations and veterans' hospitals. After polio struck Franklin, his paralysis made it difficult to enter many buildings and, as he preferred not to be seen in a wheelchair, Franklin often sent Eleanor to inspect hospitals, prisons, asylums, and other government institutions and programs.
    After her husbands death, she told reporters "The story is over", yet, less then a year later she began her serivic in the United Nations. She died on November 7th in NYC.
